Hey Scott…. I don’t know you from Adam, and you don’t know me from Eve (lol), but I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how deeply you inspire the mud in me.
I was just reading your article “Inside the Piece” and found it to be insightful and, at the same time full of poetry and inspiration.
I have been “playing in the mud” for less than a decade, but there is something…I don’t know… the best word I can find is “integral”, about mud and my being.
It is a funny thing – my heart belongs to large pieces, but my body doesn’t agree. So it is a constant for me of pushing those limits, digging deeply into the mountainside that is pottery to find the core. Sometimes the core has been 30 lbs or more of clay. In fact, my dream has been to give voice to a vessel that is multiple pieces joined in union to stand at least as tall as I am (5’4″); but, these days, it is more likely that what I can carve out is a 10 lb, 2 1/2 to 3′ piece that has a soul of it’s own.
It would be great to hang and chill with you at some point while you are creating. Your separation and integration of form and surface at the same time is fascinating and it would be pretty amazing to explore that further.
Who knows, maybe one of these days you will make it to Denver, or I will make it to Cali or Hawaii.
Either way, my fellow mud buddy, know that you are leaving footprints in this world. Who knows how long they will last, but that fact that you are making them is impactful enough 🙂
Warm Regards,
Tanja
